The city of Zarinsk was formed by order of the Presidium of the Upper Soviet of the Russian Socialist Federal Soviet Republic on 29 November 1979 by reforming the working settlement of Zarinsky in Altaisky Krai into a city .
The city of Zarinsk is the centre of the Zarinsk Region. It is located in the north eastern part of Altaisky Krai, 110 km from the Krai's centre, Barnaul. The appearance and municipal development of Zarinsk is connected with its convenient geographical location and good transport between large industrial centres, Barnaul and Novokuznetsk, with good construction sites and water resources. The city is located in the valley of the River Chumish, with railway connections to Barnaul-Novokuznetsk. Zarinsk is joined by automobile roads with Barnaul, Biisk, Belovo, Novokuznetsk, Novosibirsk.
