Paying attention to the environment, the Company is seriously concerned about the future of the region where its employees live and work. Establishing an environmentally friendly enterprise is one of the first priorities of OJSC Altai-Koks. Our environmental activities are aimed at using the best available technologies, modernizing production facilities, and utilizing environment management system.
The production upgrading projects are targeted at reducing industrial impact on the environment. In 2008, OJSC Altai-Koks allocated about RUR 118 mn. for implementing of 41 environmental protection projects, an increase of 31% from 2007. This enables the Company to comply with the pollution permissible levels by maintaining a rated technological mode of plant equipment.
Industrial water treated in hydrotechnical equipment is reused in production, which reduces the impact on natural water sources. Chumysh River water intake is equal to about 3% of industrial water used.
Industrial hazardous wastes handling at OJSC Altai-Koks is regulated by the Company’s standard "Wastes handling at OJSC Altai-Koks". The only chemical-waste storage in the region belongs to the Company. It is designated for stockpiling of third-class chemical wastes. OJSC Altai-Koks is operating facilities for recycling of liquid effluents and heavy coal-tar products resulting in converting II and III class chemical wastes into a secondary product to be used as an additive to raw materials.
The Environment & Technical Control Laboratory of OJSC Altai-Koks monitors air quality in the city and the company’s buffer zone and assesses Altai-Koks’ impact on the surface and ground waters in accordance with the requirements of the environmental legislation.
In 2007 Altai-Koks’ efforts to set up an environmentally safe enterprise were highly recognized. The Company became a laureate of the European Quality Gold Medal Contest in the 100 Best Organizations of Russia Nomination. Altai-Koks is consistent in its efforts to reduce the industrial impact on the environment and provide healthy environment for Zarinsk city population.
In 2007 the company embarked on a project of forest protector belt regeneration on the boundary of residential area. In 2008 the work on the forest protector belt regeneration was continued. RUR 1,559,000 was invested in this project.
